Sustainable development is a development approach that aims to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs (Brundtland Report, 1987). It comprises three key components, namely economic growth, social inclusion, and environmental protection.
During the 70th session of the UN General Assembly on 25 September 2015 at the United Nations Headquarters, Thailand and 192 other UN Member States adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, a global development framework for achieving sustainable social, economic, and environmental development without leaving anyone behind by the year 2030. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were set to guide each Member in realizing the 2030 Agenda.
The 17 Sustainable Development Goals comprises 169 universal, interconnected, and interdependent targets. The progress in achieving these targets is monitored and evaluated using a total of 247 indicators. The SDGs can be categorized into five groups (5Ps) based on their thematic interrelation, including (1) People: to end poverty and hunger and to reduce inequality, (2) Planet: to protect and preserve natural resources and the climate for the future generations, (3) Prosperity: to ensure that all human beings can live fulfilling lives in harmony with nature. (4) Peace: to adhere to the principles of peacefulcoexistence and to create peaceful and non-discriminating societies. and (5) Partnership: to promote the cooperation among all sectors in driving Sustainable Development.
