The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), and the African Development Bank (AfDB) presented the Africa Sustainable Development Report 2024 (ASDR) on July 16, 2024, at an event held in conjunction with the UN High-Level Political Forum for Sustainable Development in New York.
This new report contains several key recommendations, including increasing access to concessional development financing, strengthening climate data systems and early warning systems, as well as economic reforms.
The report reviews the progress of African countries toward the Sustainable Development Goals across 5 goals and 32 targets to achieve the 2030 Agenda and the African Union Agenda 2063. The goals reviewed include poverty eradication (Goal 1), zero hunger (Goal 2), climate action (Goal 13), peace, justice and strong institutions (Goal 16), and partnerships for the goals (Goal 17).
Research findings indicate that Africa is on track to achieve fewer than 3 of the 32 targets assessed in this report, with regression in 8 targets, while the remaining targets show slow progress or remain stagnant.
