On March 31, 2023, the Office of the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC), in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and with support from the ASEAN Secretariat, organized the 2nd ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Accelerating Implementation to Achieve the Sustainable Development Goals at V Hotel Bangkok. The meeting was co-chaired by Mr. Anucha Nakasai, Minister attached to the Prime Minister’s Office, and Mr. Arsenio Balisacan, Minister of the National Economic and Development Authority of the Republic of the Philippines. The meeting was attended by Mr. Kao Kim Hourn, Secretary-General of ASEAN, Mr. Danucha Pichayanan, Secretary-General of the National Economic and Social Development Council, and ministers/representatives from ASEAN member countries and various international organizations.
The ASEAN Ministerial Meeting discussed progress in implementation and approaches for jointly advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the ASEAN region, adhering to the ASEAN Vision 2025, the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and the principle of leaving no one behind. The meeting also acknowledged the outcomes of the 3rd ASEAN Meeting on Sustainable Development by National Development Planning Agencies held on March 30, 2023, which emphasized enhancing inter-country cooperation to develop data systems for monitoring and evaluating SDG progress, incorporating sustainable development principles as guidelines for formulating national policies and development plans to ensure coherence between policies, projects, and cooperation for sustainable development at all levels, and fostering cooperation and coordination among national planning agencies to achieve consistency and collectively attain regional SDG targets.
Furthermore, the meeting emphasized promoting inclusive and sustainable investment to eliminate barriers to accessing funding sources for sustainable development, enhancing regional cooperation to integrate sustainable development as part of the ASEAN Vision 2025 and during the Decade of Action, jointly promoting the strengthening and utilization of information technology and innovation, and fostering the power of networks and stakeholders involved in sustainable development to support the achievement of SDGs.
On this occasion, the Minister attached to the Prime Minister’s Office (Mr. Anucha Nakasai) addressed the meeting regarding Thailand’s progress in advancing SDGs, including areas where ASEAN member countries should focus collectively on addressing regional poverty issues, emphasizing greater youth participation in driving and determining the direction of SDGs, promoting an atmosphere of sharing and learning best practices among national development planning agencies, and encouraging the development of capital markets and new financial instruments to support SDGs. He also highlighted important projects that Thailand has implemented, such as the Million Family Project, the State Welfare Card Project, and the Thailand Poverty Alleviation and Human Development for All Ages Program (TPMAP), demonstrating Thailand’s strong role in driving concrete regional cooperation for sustainable development.
