ChulaMUN organizes seminar “AI-Powered Economic Security and Green Transition for Sustainable Future” at SX2024 to promote understanding of AI utilization for driving sustainability

On October 4, 2024, the Chulalongkorn University Model United Nations Club (ChulaMUN) in collaboration with C ASEAN organized a seminar titled “AI-Powered Economic Security and Green Transition for Sustainable Future” as part of the Sustainability Expo 2024 (SX2024) at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center. The event featured Dr. Thuttai Keeratipongpaiboon, Director of Strategy and International Cooperation Coordination, National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC), and Dr. Waewpailin Phanphakdi, Lecturer at the Department of Public Administration, Faculty of Political Science, Chulalongkorn University, who participated in discussions and exchanged views on the role and impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI). The seminar was moderated by Mr. Stefan Quinn, a student from the Faculty of Science, Chulalongkorn University.

In the aforementioned discussion, Dr. Thuttai presented and discussed important information about AI, with key points summarized as follows:
– AI plays a crucial role in the development of society, with both positive and negative effects. On the positive side, AI
contributes to achieving cost-effective production outcomes (Productivity), while on the negative side, AI may be a factor that causes increased inequality gaps.

  • Although AI may replace low-skilled labor, particularly in routine tasks, there are still certain types of work that AI cannot replace, such as jobs requiring critical thinking or high-level skills. Therefore, developing workforce capabilities to enhance their potential will help strengthen economic security rather than negatively impact low-skilled workers.
  • Since AI development requires substantial energy consumption, an important solution to address this issue is the adoption of alternative or renewable energy sources. Furthermore, it is undeniable that future energy consumption will need to increase several times more than current levels, but AI will also develop enhanced capabilities. Therefore, we should promote the use of AI for analysis and development to achieve sustainable energy use across all sectors.

This discussion serves as an important platform for promoting understanding and raising awareness about AI, while creating a sustainable future alongside adaptation to diverse and increasingly advanced technologies. This enables everyone to cope with the dynamic changes in technology or create new knowledge, and demonstrates the proper and appropriate utilization of technology to minimize environmental, economic, and social impacts from AI usage.
