Meeting of the Committee for Sustainable Development (CSD) No. 1/2023

On Wednesday, March 8, 2023, at 9:30 AM The Meeting of the Committee for Sustainable Development (CSD) No. 1/2023 was held, chaired by the Deputy Prime Minister (General Prawit Wongsuwan), with participants from relevant government agencies and development partners. The meeting acknowledged the progress of implementation under Thailand’s SDG Roadmap, including the linkage between SDG Targets and the sub-master plan targets (Y1) of the master plans under the National Strategy, and the integration of main SDG targets into the National Monitoring and Evaluation System (eMENSCR), which enables SDG implementation to proceed alongside the National Strategy implementation. The academic seminar and Sufficiency Economy exhibition for 2022 under the theme “Transforming Thailand: Moving Forward Sustainably” raised awareness about SDGs in society, and the collaborative development of the Sustainable Development Investment Map led to increased opportunities for sustainable investment.

Simultaneously, the meeting approved the draft Prime Minister’s Office Regulation on Strategic Environmental Assessment B.E. …, which will lead to the establishment of a policy mechanism and governance framework for the Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) tool at the national level, with the Prime Minister as chairperson. The meeting also assigned the Office of the National Economic and Social Development Council to submit the draft regulation to the Cabinet for approval. SEA serves as a tool to support government agencies’ planning that must consider economic, social, and environmental factors in a balanced manner, emphasizing participation from all relevant sectors to achieve SDG targets.

In recent times, development partners from all sectors have played important roles in driving Thailand’s SDGs, including the Public Private Partnership for Sustainable Plastic and Waste Management (PPP Plastics) project, comprehensive waste management, the application of Sufficiency Economy Philosophy to address informal debt problems in Dong Khee Lek Sub-district, Prachinburi Province, and the development of educational curricula and out-of-classroom learning about SDGs to integrate SDGs into teaching and learning curricula.

Furthermore, Thailand’s SDG implementation results have gained international recognition, including Thai companies ranking in the Gold Class of the Sustainability Yearbook 2023 by S&P Global, with the highest number globally at rank 1, ranking 1st among 20 countries with over 90% sustainability report disclosure, and 2 Thai universities ranking in the top 100 universities supporting SDGs: Chulalongkorn University (rank 16) and Chiang Mai University (rank 70).
