During July 10-14, 2023, which was the first week of the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development 2023 (HLPF 2023) organized by the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, United States, the Thai delegation delivered statements to demonstrate Thailand’s commitment to seriously advancing the SDGs in the Decade of Action and to show the international community that Thailand has been implementing results-oriented operations to build a sustainable and secure society, leaving no one behind.
At the HLPF 2023 meeting, which comprised 193 UN member states, 2 observer states, and Major Groups & Other Stakeholders, Thai representatives delivered statements on 4 goals:
Goal 6: Clean Water and Sanitation – Thailand aims to build a society where people have continuous access to clean and adequate water, with efficient water management systems and appropriate public utility services, adhering to the principle that access to clean water is a fundamental right that everyone should receive. This aligns with the global drive to achieve SDG 6 and the serious implementation of the Water Action Agenda discussed at the 2023 UN Water Conference earlier this year.
Goal 7: Affordable and Clean Energy – Thailand has focused on implementing 3 important areas: (1) ensuring universal access to affordable, reliable, and modern energy services; (2) increasing the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix; and (3) doubling the global rate of improvement in energy efficiency. This will support sustainable global economic development and create balanced growth centered on both people and nature.
Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities – Thailand has continuously driven implementation to achieve SDG 11, such as developing participatory urban development involving all sectors to create spaces that truly respond to residents’ needs, or implementing the “Housing for All” policy to promote universal and equitable access to housing, which is a fundamental factor for living.
Goal 17: Partnerships for Sustainable Development – This year, the United Nations has focused on Financing for Development, as the global financing situation has entered a crisis since the COVID-19 pandemic and has intensified currently. Many countries worldwide, especially least developed countries, need capital for recovery and development to achieve stability and sustainability. Thailand has delivered statements supporting the UN Secretary-General’s call for global mobilization of $500 billion USD annually for development, and has also supported various development cooperation concepts, including the use of FinTech and digital technology to reduce financial transaction costs, leveraging South-South cooperation, and the OCA Policy Brief on Reforms to the International Financial Architecture.
The Thai statements delivered by representatives from the Department of Public Works and Town Country Planning, Ministry of Interior; Ministry of Social Development and Human Security; Ministry of Foreign Affairs; and the Office of the National Economic and Social Development Council demonstrate Thailand’s commitment to driving domestic operations linked to global SDG achievement. The latest UN Secretary-General’s report indicates that very high challenges remain. Thailand has demonstrated its position to the international community regarding its readiness to move forward together to build a sustainable society, leaving no place and no one behind.
