Thailand’s SDGs Hackathon: Mobilizing Ideas to Conquer Sustainability

The Office of the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC), as the lead agency in driving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and serving as the secretariat of the Committee for Sustainable Development, has collaborated with network partners from all sectors to organize the “Thailand’s SDGs Hackathon: Mobilizing Ideas to Conquer Sustainability” project to promote and raise public awareness about the Sustainable Development Goals and encourage participation in driving SDGs implementation across the 5 dimensions (5Ps) in Thai society.

The Thailand’s SDGs Hackathon: Mobilizing Ideas to Conquer Sustainability project is a continuation of the “Kao Pho Dee” event that NESDC organizes annually to promote and raise awareness about sustainable development, which is an issue that the Prime Minister has given great importance to. From January 5-28, 2024, NESDC opened registration for participants to compete in a short video contest (maximum 1 minute) through the TikTok platform, with content that must align with the Sustainable Development Goals across all 5 dimensions (5Ps): (1) Social dimension (People), (2) Economic dimension (Prosperity), (3) Environmental dimension (Planet), (4) Peace dimension (Peace), and (5) Partnership for Development dimension (Partnership) and 17 goals. More than 150 teams showed interest and submitted videos for the competition, and NESDC and network partners selected the final 10 teams (2 teams per dimension) that best aligned with SDGs content across all 5 dimensions and 17 goals and demonstrated creativity, to participate in the Incubation Program training course on February 3-4, 2024.

The Incubation Program training was conducted at Training Room 3, 3rd Floor, True Digital Park for the final 10 competing teams, with the objective of preparing participants and enhancing their understanding of SDGs while enabling them to translate this knowledge into creative media under guidance from representatives of various leading organizations, including the Advertising Association of Thailand, Shellhut Entertainment, new generation directors and writers, Indorama Ventures, IRPC, Oklin, Kasikornbank, Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand, and Thailand Institute of Justice. The Incubation Program activities on February 3, 2024, focused on SDGs knowledge courses, and February 4, 2024, on media production and content creation courses to make content more engaging, so participants could further develop and enhance their original videos to better align with SDGs content and become more interesting for presentation to the judging panel in the final round.

On February 17, 2024, at the Virtual Media Lab, Thailand Creative Design Center (TCDC), during the final presentation and competition round, the event was honored by the presence of (1) Dr. Wanchat Suwannakitti, Deputy Secretary-General of NESDC, (2) Ms. Jomkwan Pinyowit, representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, (3) Dr. Thanyaporn Kritthitayawuth, Director of the UN Global Compact Network Thailand, (4) Ms. Asa Phiwkham, representative of the Creative Economy Agency, (5) Mr. Songklod Bangyikhan, Executive Editor of The Cloud, and (6) Ms. Erika Mesintree Chen, founder of the Youth In Charge platform, who participated in the event and served as judges.

The competition results yielded winners across all 5 dimensions as follows: 1. Economic dimension (Prosperity): “Youth 2030 Team” presented work on the concept of community learning centers. 3.
