About SDGs – Goal 6: Ensure Availability and Sustainable Management of Water and Sanitation for All

Goal 6: Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all

Water is a vital resource for sustaining life and conducting economic activities. Promoting access to water and sanitation services, as well as sustainable water resource management, is one of the important development agendas at both national and global levels. To enable people to access clean water and good sanitation, it is necessary to drive quality, comprehensive, and sustainable water management. This encompasses access to adequate and standard drinking water, promoting systematic water quality improvement and wastewater treatment, enhancing water use efficiency, integrated water management, protecting and restoring water-related ecosystems, as well as expanding cooperation with international organizations and increasing local participation in water resource management. Although people can access water sources for consumption at a high rate, water quality control to meet standards is still limited to areas with water supply systems only. Water sources used by people in remote areas have not been comprehensively improved for appropriate quality. Meanwhile, economic growth and urban community expansion have resulted in increased water demand, leading to the use of water resources beyond capacity and the discharge of untreated wastewater into water sources. This is partly due to the agricultural sector, which is mostly conducted in open areas directly connected to water sources, causing waste and chemicals to contaminate water sources and the environment. Additionally, local agencies still have limited capacity, particularly in data collection and the use of technology to support efficient water resource management in their areas.

Sub-goal 6.1

Achieve universal and equitable access to safe and affordable drinking water for all by 2030

Sub-goal 6.2

Achieve access to adequate and equitable sanitation and hygiene for all and end open defecation, paying special attention to the needs of women and girls and those in vulnerable situations by 2030

Sub-goal 6.3

Improve water quality by reducing pollution, eliminating dumping and minimizing release of hazardous chemicals and materials, halving the proportion of untreated wastewater and substantially increasing recycling and safe reuse globally by 2030

Sub-goal 6.4

Substantially increase water-use efficiency across all sectors and ensure sustainable withdrawals and supply of freshwater to address water scarcity and substantially reduce the number of people suffering from water scarcity by 2030

Sub-goal 6.5

Implement integrated water resources management at all levels, including through transboundary cooperation as appropriate by 2030

Sub-goal 6.6

Protect and restore water-related ecosystems, including mountains, forests, wetlands, rivers, aquifers and lakes by 2020

Target 1.A

Expand international cooperation and capacity-building support to developing countries in water- and sanitation-related activities and programmes, including water harvesting, desalination, water efficiency, wastewater treatment, recycling and reuse technologies
